Day 47 – Late season tactics

July 28, 2016 | admin Posted in Blog

The pike have moved into the ‘cabbage’ weed beds now searching for their prey. Although water temps are critical in the early months of our season, the late summer game changes. The prey species are seeking cover inside those weed beds and the pike follow them there. With that move, they spread out through our many beds, so we keep moving to stay on top of them. Weather is always a concern and since the wind blows those baitfish from weedbed area to back bays we have to look in both. The key is to keep moving and when we do find them, change approaches. Soft plastics and a fly are a great choice for slow moving pike with a changeup of burning a larger spinner past their nose. Either way, the opportunity to entice that violent strike exists.
